W.y, alors protestant, a eu le bonheur de finir dans la communion catholique, a Paris, vers le commencement du second Empire. Il ne croyait pas beaucou…p aux revenants, mais sa conviction etait que, au debut de l'institution surtout, les assurances sur la vie, qui ont leur excellent cote, furent l'origine d'un assez grand nombre de crimes. Mr W.y avait occupe un emploi important dans les bureaux de la premiere en date parmi les compagnies sur la vie; il y etait chef du contentieux et avait puise une partie des details, qu'on va lire dans les pieces d'une enquete, poursuivie a Londres et a Paris en 1820 pour soustraire sa Societe, le Campbell-Life, a l'obligation de solder le dividende enorme dont il va etre question dans notre drame. Au fond de ce recit, Mr W.y, qui avait le coup d'oeil anglais, voyait surtout la menace sociale contenue dans la situation d'un homme sans prejuges pour qui telle somme, possible a conquerir par un mefait, dix, vingt et meme cent mille francs, par exemple, devient d'une part, une fois chaque annee, a jour fixe, le STRICT necessaire independamment des besoins de sa vie, puisqu'elle represente pour lui sa prime a payer, - et pour qui, d'autre part, cette meme somme ou prime, regulierement payee aux echeances, represente un grand nombre de millions dans un avenir prochain. C'est la un cas de tentation, de tentation exorbitante qui doit etre rare; mais Mr J. N. W.y (il s'y connaissait) ne regardait point comme unique le curieux exemple qu'il en citait et qui fait le sujet de la presente histoire. Paul Feval est un ecrivain francais, ne le 29 septembre 1816 a Rennes et mort le 7 mars 1887 a Paris 7e. Son oeuvre, composee de plus de 200 volumes dont de nombreux romans populaires edites en feuilleton, eut un succes considerable de son vivant, egalant celle d'Honore de Balzac et d'Alexandre Dumas. Biographie Les jeunes annees Paul Henry Corentin Feval nait le 29 septembre 1816 a trois heures et demie du soir dans l'hotel de Blossac, rue du Four-du-Chapitre a Rennes. Son pere, royaliste et chretien, originaire de Troyes appartient a la petite magistrature, il est conseiller a la cour royale de la ville. Sa mere, Jeanne-Josephine-Renee Le Baron, est Bretonne de la region de Redon, et petite-fille du jurisconsulte Henri Francois Potier de La Germondaye. La famille est nombreuse (cinq enfants) et les revenus sont insuffisants. En 1826, a l'age de 10 ans, Paul entre comme interne au college royal de Rennes (aujourd'hui, lycee Emile-Zola). Son pere meurt l'annee suivante. En troisieme, au plus fort des troubles revolutionnaires de 1830, il affiche au college des opinions monarchistes, declenche des bagarres. Le proviseur le prie d'aller se calmer a la campagne. Il passe quelques mois chez son oncle, le comte Auguste de Foucher de Careil, au chateau de la Foret-Neuve, en Glenac. Le sejour va le marquer profondement. Des conspirateurs s'assemblent la nuit au chateau, on fond des balles. Paul laisse son imagination s'enfievrer, il ne reve que batailles et massacres. Il entend des legendes macabres a la veillee, parcourt les landes, erre entre les marais, s'enfonce dans les brouillards, recueille des recits de la bouche d'anciens chouans de 1793. Il revient a Rennes en janvier 1831, et entre en classe de seconde. Il obtient son diplome de bachelier en 1833. Il oriente ses etudes vers le droit. Il passe sa licence a l'universite de Rennes et devient avocat en 1836. Mais il abandonne rapidement cette profession, apres une plaidoirie malheureuse.
