The copyright date is 1899, and the Preface is dated November 1899, but the first edition was published in 1900, with that date printed on the title page. A "second edition", with those words printed on the title page, was also issued in 1900. INSCRIBED BY THORINGTON (on the front flyleaf): "With the author's compliments." Thorington "was for many years professor of ophthalmology at the Philadelphia Polyclinic, and published numerous articles and monographs on skiascopy and other methods for the determination of refraction" (Albert, Source Book of Ophthalmology, p. 342). Signed by Author(s).
