Ex-Library with stamping & pocket. Later printing (originally 1896). Only Fair condition, hard cover, no dust jacket. Dark green covers are worn and lightly soiled, corners frayed, spine cocked (slanted). Pages are yellowing and the book is cracked open at the title page. Still firmly bound though. No tears or crease, no markings. Translated by Catherine Janvier and with an introduction by Thomas Janvier.

Later printing. Translated from the Provencal by Catherine Janvier. Introduction by Thomas A. Janvier. Later printings also include a note from the publisher which reprints letters from the author to Gladstone after the book first appeared - in his letter Gras describes the events in the novel as based on those which actually happened to his great-grandfather. This novel of the French Revolution is uncommon in its focus on the peasants of the South of France and their involvement, rather than on the aristrocracy or the leaders. Small duodecimo boundin rust-colored cloth with gold lettering on the spine and front cover, with a small decoration on the front. Good condition overall - some wear to the ends of the spine.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition in English. This Provençal poet and novelist (1844-1901) achieved some success with novels about the French Revolution. They were written in Provençal which is translated here by Catherine A. Janvier. Catherine's husband, Thomas A. Janvier, supplies an Introduction. This copy has the expected browning to edges and some slight wear to spine ends, but is very good.

I am very pleased to offer a really nice copy of a classic tale of French history; the book is titled: The Reds of the Midi An Episode of the French Revolution translated from the Provencal of Felix Gras by Catherine A. Janvier and with an Introduction by Thomas A. Janvier. This small hard cover book (5 ¼ x 7 ½ inches 366 pages) was published by D. Appleton and Company of New York dated 1896 and I believe this is the First American Edition. The book is bound in marbled paper boards with a quarter spine and corners in calf leather and with gilt and maroon decorations and titles on the spine. The top edge of the pages is gilt. It was published in a special format as part of the Appleton s Town and Country Library- No. 194 ½. Condition: This book is in very good condition. There is some very minor rubbing to calf leather especially at the corners and spine tips but nothing extreme. Inside the book is unmarked and the interior pages are clean and bright throughout. There is a tiny hole of a borer about 1/8 of an inch deep in the first few pages. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
