Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the mysteries of the universe, exploring the nature of the cosmos through the lens of scientific discovery. The author takes readers on a journey through space and time, examining the origins, composition, and evolution of stars, planets, and galaxies. Utilizing evidence from shooting stars, meteorites, and celestial observations, this book challenges conventional theories and presents a compelling case for a universe shaped by cosmic collisions. The author argues that the universe is constantly evolving, with stars and planets being born and dying in a dynamic dance of creation and destruction. This cosmic tapestry is woven from the remnants of countless collisions, each event contributing to the formation and evolution of celestial bodies. By unraveling the mysteries of shooting stars and meteorites, this book sheds new light on the origins and destiny of our own planet and the vast universe that surrounds us. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into scientific conundrums that have emerged due to the conflict between physicists and geologists regarding the duration of solar heat. Physicists, relying on the principle of energy conservation, estimate a lifespan of ten to fifteen million years for the sun's heat supply, while geologists posit a substantially longer period of one hundred to two hundred million years to account for geological transformations. The author examines each argument, delving into the calculations of physicists and the evidence presented by geologists. They explore alternative theories, considering the impact of meteorites, gravitational contraction, and the enigmatic force of gravity. The book also touches upon the latest scientific discoveries and advancements, highlighting the ongoing debate and the quest for a comprehensive theory that can reconcile these contrasting viewpoints. Ultimately, this book invites readers to ponder the mysteries of the cosmos and appreciate the ongoing scientific journey to unravel them. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Four books published between 1890 and 1893 by S. (Samuel) Laing for Chapman and Hall, London. Human Origins from 1892 appears to be a first edition (print run of 1,500) while the other three volumes are clearly stated as later editions in which each edition consisted of 1,000 volumes. The four backs match in terms of layout, design, typeface and ornamentation with the exception of the color of the cloth covers: black, navy blue, brown and maroon. Laing, born in 1812, is described by Wikipedia as a British railway administrator, politician and writer on science and religion. Wikipedia: "In later life, he became well known as an author, his Modern Science and Modern Thought (1885), Problems of the Future (1889) and Human Origins (1892) being widely read, not only by reason of the writer's influential position, experience of affairs and clear style, but also through their popular and at the same time well-informed treatment of the scientific problems of the day. Laing's attitude was generally positive towards new developments in science, and he offered an optimistic vision of progressive modernity. He also wrote on religion. His book A Modern Zoroastrian argued that the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism was more consistent with modern scientific thought than was traditional Christianity. He argued that the "all pervading principle of polarity" that was central Zoroastrian thought has been confirmed by science, and that modern Christianity should abandon its traditional theology to centre on the figure of Jesus as an ideal of humanity.".
