Full leather with blind tooled boards top of spine is split one inch on one side and 2.5 inches on the other. corners well worn. Hinges are a bit shaky. some foxing of plates, Margin of one plate creased with minor tears. seven plates have water staining. since the shape and size of these differ and adjacent pages are not affected I can only assume they were damaged before binding. there is a frontis engraving of Peter Nicholson (author?) engraved half title page, title page, xxxvi, Book 1 Carpentry pp 1 to 80 plus 42 full page plates, Book 2 Joinery pp 81 to 132 plus 41 full page plates, index to Book 1 and 2 pp133 to 140, Book 3 Cabinet-making pp 1 to 36 plus 6 full page plates . Checking plates has been a nightmare. Some have been bound in the wrong place. The plate listed as Timber Bridge across the Clyde (no XLI) is missing but there are 2 plates numbered XXIV the additional being the Roof of Kings College Chapel which we assume is a substitute. The contents page also lists a plate XXXVII - Centres (frontispiece) described. From reading the text it is clear that this refers to the engraved half title page. …

Publisher's original binding of quarter morocco over marbled boards - morocco spine section and corners, brown end-papers. Condition good, the covers are very rubbed and the hinges are weak, some spotting to most of the plates, pages in quite clean condition a few grubby margins else quite clean. Hardcover. Condition: Good Plus. No Jacket. Reprint. 140, 36pp 1839 84 plates (plate 37 appears to be missing and 84 is present but mispaginated). A good or good plus copy - re-bound in fairly contemporaneous boards, bound in half morocco brown leather with 4 raised bands to the spine. New marbled endpapers - missing the original front endpaper, though the rear one has survived. The engraved half-title page is present but is spotted, worn and chipped to the peripheries. Similarly there is some wear to the margins of the title page with a small section of loss to the lower corner of the title page and again a loss of the lower corner of the the preface page - in both cases no loss of text. The final index page is present but again has some creasing and wear and a few chips to the peripheries. A few short tears to the inner hinge of the preface page. So apart from one plate all the text is present, but bound in 'modern' half leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Someone has added to a printed sellotape - 'practical carpentry' which is affixed to the head of the front endpaper. There are 6 plates of cabinet making at the rear - as called for.…

Boards and spine worn and rubbed, remains of tape repairs on front board and title page, re-bound, browning to most plates; 109 plates called for, 107 present. A later Kelly edition of Nicholson's classic work, with additional plates added (the comparison in quality with Nicholson's originals is striking), and a copy of The Practical Builder's Price Book bound in. The binding instructions list 109 plates, but only 107 are present - whether this is because they are missing or because the instructions were wrong isn't clear.…

Rubbed and marked, front board detached, substantial piece of the spine missing, rear hinge cracked, contents intact and tight, some foxing, bottom edges damp marked. Like previous Kelly editions, this took the original two volumes and printed them together (it is difficult to perceive what Tredgold's revisions might amount to), with seperate paginations. Would make a nice restoration project. …
