Early inked ownership inscription to FEP, without free-endpapers, title page browned. An enlarged edition of a popular compilation of essays intended to assist the moral and spiritual education of young students of both sexes. Contemporary calf, backed in vellum, gilt & red morocco spine label (worn, scuffing, edgewear, wear to corners, w/o 4 plates), still a good sound reference copy. Revised & expanded edition of this popular work first compiled by Anne Fisher (1719-1778) who not only ran "The Printing Press" with her husband Thomas Slack, but also operated Fisher's School for girls in St. Nicholas churchyard, Newcastle, presumably educating all nine of their daughters as well. This pioneering educator, and successful author is perhaps best remembered as the first female Grammarian, and her New Grammar which was first published in 1745 would eventually see 40 different editions. Her educational textbooks, including this volume as well as the New English Tutor, New English Exercise Book, and An Accurate New Spelling Dictionary were a significant contribution to education for young women in the 18th- and 19th-Centuries.
