The Centenary Edition of Sir Walter Scott's Waverly Novels. Octavo, 12 volumes bound in three quarter morocco over marbled boards by Robertson with burgundy morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Illustrated title page and tissue-guarded frontispiece to each volume, in-text illustrations. In very good condition. A lengthy series of novels by Sir Walter Scott, The Waverley Novels were among the most popular and widely read novels in Europe for nearly a century. Because Scott did not publicly acknowledge authorship until 1827, the series takes its name from Waverley, the first novel of the series released in 1814. The later books bore the words "by the author of Waverley" on their title pages. "Scottâs influence as a novelist was incalculable; he established the form of the historical novel, and the form of the short story" (Drabble, 879).

With half-titles in each volume and erratum in volume three, which is often lacking. 8vo, handsomely bound in vellum over blue paper-covered boards, with the publisher's original printed paper labels on the spines, top edge gilt, others untrimmed xxxii, 302; 319; 315; 320 pp. A set in beautiful condition, the text-block as pristine, edges untrimmed, as near to spotless and 'as new' as could be realistically expected. The bindings are sturdy and strong and show very little wear or use, the blue paper and vellum are have a bit of spotting from time, publisher's printed labels are fresh and very legible. Ownership signature of James Buchanan and stamp of the Bellfield Library unobtrusively at the top of each titlepage, no other markings within, small circular paper shelf label on volume one and with slight evidence of there once being matching labels on the other volumes. AN OUTSTANDING FIRST EDITION SET OF THIS WAVERLEY NOVEL, A SET IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION. PEVERIL OF THE PEAK is also Sir Walter Scott's longest novel, and thus the longest of the Waverley series. As with all the Waverley novels before 1827 publication was anonymous. The story centers on the Popish Plot, and takes place around 1678. Actions of the story occur in the Peak District of Central England, on the Isle of Man, and in London. An historical romance; Julian Peveril, a Cavalier, is in love with Alice Bridgenorth, a Roundhead's daughter, but both he and his father are accused of involvement with the "Popish Plot" of 1678.
