Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - In recent years bent-core (BC)liquid crystals have begun to mature into a relevantsubfield ofresearch. The shape and symmetry of BC moleculesoffers awealth of new questions not presented by calamiticliquid crystals, many of which have yet to be addressed. In this work,I use magneticfield induced birefringence, dynamic lightscattering, and densitymeasurements to provide evidence of a transitionbetween two opticallyisotropic phases in two BC liquid crystals, and toshow that this transition can be understood inthe framework of the theoretically predicted, butpreviouslyunobserved tetrahedratic - isotropic transition. Also, four distinct, frequency dependent, regions ofelectrohydrodynamic convection (EHC) werecharacterized in a BC liquid crystal, which showedtwo frequency dependent changes in thesign of the electrical conductivity anisotropy. Thiswork looks into some exciting behaviors in novel BCliquid crystal materials and should be of interestthose involved with EHC or BC liquid crystals.
Condition: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 356 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | In the last 20 years the study of nonlinear nonequilibrium phenomena in spa tially extended systems, with particular emphasis on pattern-forming phenomena, has been one of the very active areas in physics, exhibiting interesting ramifi cations into other sciences. During this time the study of the "classic" systems, like Rayleigh-Benard convection and Taylor vortex flow in simple fluids, has also been supplemented by the study of more complex systems. Here liquid crystals have played, and are still playing, a major role. One might say that liquid crystals provide just the right amount and right kind of complexity. They are full of non linearities and give rise to new symmetry classes, which are sometimes actually simpler to deal with qualitatively, but they still allow a quantitative description of experiments in many cases. In fact one of the attractions of the field is the close contact between experimentalists and theorists. Hydrodynamic instabilities in liquid crystals had already experienced a period of intense study in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but at that time neither the ex perimental and theoretical tools nor the concepts had been developed sufficiently far to address the questions that have since been found to be of particular interest. The renewed interest is also evidenced by the fact that a new series of workshops has evolved. The first one took place in 1989 in Bayreuth and united participants from almost all groups working in pattern formation in liquid crystals.

Includes: Introduction to Pattern Formation in Nonequilibrium Systems; Hydrodynamics & Electrohydrodynamics of Liquid Crystals; General Mathematical Description of Pattern-Forming Instabilities; Flow Instabilities in Nematics; Experiments on Thermally Driven Convection; Electrohydrodynamic Instabilities in Nematic Liquid Crystals; Mesophase Growth; Viscous Fingering; Thermal Fluctuations in Pattern Forming Instabilities. ["This volume bridges two topics of considerable current interest: pattern formation in nonequilibrium phenomena and physics of liquid crystals, both active and diverse areas of research. Because liquid crystals form large-scale and regular patterns under the influence of a variety of applied fields they are fruitful materials to study the spontaneous formation and evolution of ordered and disordered patterns. The chapters, each by a noted researcher in the field, briefly summarize the fundamental work done in the 1960s but concentrate on reviewing results from the recent resurgence of interest in the field as well as indicating the direction of current work" - publisher's description].

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Electrohydrodynamic convection (EHC) in nematic liquid crystals is a crucial model system for the study of spontaneous, non-equilibrium pattern formation in anisotropic systems. To characterize the EHC patterns, I have utilized two nematic samples: 4-ethyl-2-fluoro-4'-[2-(trans-4-n-pentylcyclohexyl)-ethyl]-biphenyl (I52) and a mixture of 65 wt.-% p-butyl-p'-methoxy-azoxybenzene and 35 wt.-% p-ethyl-p'-methoxy-azoxybenzene (Phase 5), filled in standard planar cell. In I52, over certain range of the conductivity, the initial transition leads to two families of counter-propagating oblique modes that loose stability at onset. These experimental observations are in agreement with the standard model and weak electrolyte model of electroconvection. To study spatiotemporal chaos (STC), four-envelopes of the pattern are extracted by applying 2D spatial and 1D temporal Fourier transform. The temporal variation of the amplitudes of these envelopes is chaotic in space and time. In Phase 5, I observed oblique stationary (OS) modes at lower frequencies and normal traveling (NT) modes at higher frequencies resulting discontinuous jump in the Hopf frequency.
