Girodet-Trioson, schloß sich aber bald Géricault und Delacroix an. Bereits 1824 wurde er mit einer Goldmedaille ausgezeichnet, 1828 mit dem Kreuz der Ehrenlegion, stellte nicht nur im Pariser Salon, sondern auch in der Royal Academy in London aus. Er fertigte im Auftrag Königs Louis Philippe zahlreiche Darstellungen von den Glanztaten der französischen Marine an und arbeitete 1841 für den Zaren. Seine Seestücke bestechen durch ihre effektvolle Ausleuchtung und ihre romantische Stimmung. "Théodore Gudin (1802-1880), eine Generation jünger als Friedrich [Caspar David], zählte zu Lebzeiten wohl zu den bekanntesten und erfolgreichsten französischen Künstlern seiner Generation. Offiziell honoriert als "Maler der königlichen Marine", stand er als Freund Louis-Napoléon Bonapartes sowie aufgrund seiner herausragenden kommunikativen Fähigkeiten bald auch in diplomatischen Diensten. Heute gilt er als der romantischte und den Marinemalern. Der hier ausgestellte Schiffbruch entstand 1827 als ein Jugendwerk des gerade 25jährigen. Nicht aus der Nähe, sondern aus gesicherter Distanz und von leicht erhöhtem Standpunkt inszeniert Gudin das Thema. Schwer zur Seite gekippt liegt ein dickbäuchiges Segelschiff mit einem Leck im Rumpf am Strand. Ringsherum herrscht reges Treiben, herbeigelaufene Helfer versorgen Überlebende oder sind damit beschäftigt, angeschwemmte Masten, Truhen und anderes Treibgut zu sichern. Die Rettungsaktion ist so lebhaft beschrieben, dass man zwischen dem Brausen der aufbrandenden Wellen sogar die fetzenhaft zu vernehmenden Worte der Helfer und das aufgeregte Kreischen der Möwen zu hören meint. Die Szenerie ist aber nur Teil eines größeren Ganzen. Der Blick wird alsbald aus der Bucht hinaus auf die Weite des Meeres geführt, wo die Wasser beruhigt sind und der Himmel aufklart. Segelschiffe gleiten mühelos am Horizont dahin. Das Drama am Strand berührt es nicht. Die Einbettung der Katastrophe in einen größeren landschaftlichen Kontext enthebt das Ereignis des Schiffbruchs seiner Dramatik: Er muss nicht zwingend tödlich ausgehen. So steht nicht die Darstellung grundlegender Bedrohung im Vordergrund, vielmehr bahnen sich hier jugendliche Neugier und Schaulust den Weg. So wird das Bild zu einem erzählfreudigen Schaustück. Die distanzierte Position des nicht unmittelbar Betroffenen erlaubt Entspannung. Man ist der Natur nicht ausgesetzt, sondern überblickt sie im doppelten Sinne des Wortes. Dies markiert den wesentlichen Unterschied zu Caspar David Friedrich, dessen Eismeer erlebt und erlitten werden muss, obwohl (oder gerade weil) es menschenleer ist und umfangen von einer nahezu unerträglichen Stille.".…
