He carefully describes symptoms, disease progression, pathological findings, and diagnostic distinctions, helping to establish hydrocephalus as a clearly defined medical condition rather than a vaguely understood neurological disorder. His work marks a critical advancement in the scientific understanding of brain disease during the eighteenth century and contributed significantly to the development of neurology as a medical specialty. The volume also includes additional medical observations and previously unpublished material, expanding Whyttâs investigations into nervous system disorders and physiological function. This work became one of the foundational texts in neurological and pediatric medicine and was widely consulted by physicians throughout Europe. This copy bears institutional provenance from the Library of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University and the ownership label of physician Arthur Edward Lyons, reflecting its long-standing presence within scholarly medical collections. Condition & Binding:ÂBound in later quarter calf over marbled boards, with gilt titling to spine. Binding remains sound and structurally secure, with moderate rubbing and toning to spine and extremities. Text block complete and legible throughout. Pages show moderate age toning, scattered foxing, and dampstaining primarily to lower margins, heavier toward the rear. Overall- very good.

Expertly rebound and with new endpapers. Small stamp of 'Library of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Marlyand' on bottom of title page and last page and on top of first text page. Faint spotting to title page and pages of contents, text pages clear and without damahe. Almost Fine The "Observations.) were the first account of the clinical course of tuberculous meningitis in children and were here published for the first time. The other papers printed with it, had mostly appeared in journals before. The other papers are: An account of some experiments with opium, An essay on the strength of lime-waters, etc. A letter to the Rev. Thomas Birch Postscript to Dr Whytt's observations on Lord Walpole's case Some observations . of the Carlsbad waters, lime-water and soap. An instance of the electrical virtue in the care of Palsy Cases of the remarkable effects of blisters. Extract of a letter. Whytt divided the disease into three stages according to the character of the pulse, and he attributed its various manifestations to the presence of a serous exudate in the brain. "It is a masterpiece of clinical observation, the finest first description of a disease to appear until then. Brief and lucid, the monograph is based on about a dozen cases in which everything of clinical value that could be detected without modern laboratory apparatus is recorded. Monro's foramen, connecting the lateral and third ventricles of the brain, was first observed greatly dilated in one of the cases here described, which Monro (Secundus) and Whytt saw in 1764 during a consultation" (Samuel Radbill, enthusiastically, in DSB).

[With the printed d…edication by Quin to William Cullen, Professsor of Medicine in the University of Edinburgh]. Charles William Quin was the second son of Henry Quin (qv). He and his brother Thomas James were both admitted as pupil pensioners to Trinity College Dublin on 29 August 1772. Both brothers attended Harrow prior to admission to Trinity College, and their home was stated to be Cork. Charles William was awarded his BA by Trinity College in 1777, and his MD by Edinburgh University in 1779. His thesis was entitled De Hydrocephalus Interno. Quin was admitted a Licentiate of the College of Physicians of Ireland in May 1783 and was awarded the Fellowship of the College at the same time. He went on to be elected President in 1788 and was made an Honorary Fellow of the College in 1798. He wrote A Treatise on Dropsy of the Brain Illustrated by a Variety of Cases. This contained observations on the use and effects of the Digitalis Purpurea dropsies in a special appendix. It also had a personal dedication to William Cullen MD dated 1790. In the preface he states that his Edinburgh thesis was reprinted on 2 occasions, once in Webster's Systemica Medicinae Practica and on the other occasion in Smellie's Thesaurus. On St Patrick's Day 1785 Quin was appointed Physician General to His Majesty's Army in Ireland and, as such, was also Physician to the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. He married a Miss Preston, daughter of Rev Nathanial Preston of Swainstown, County Meath, in August 1784 (Source: Royal College of Physicians of Ireland).
