Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the New Forest in England, a region deeply intertwined with Norman history and royal power. The author delves into the origins of the forest, examining the controversial claim that William the Conqueror violently afforested the area, displacing inhabitants and conver…ting it into a hunting ground. The narrative then navigates through the forest's centuries-old landscape, exploring the unique laws that governed it, the survival of ancient timber, and the captivating interplay of nature and human influence. The text vividly portrays the forest's diverse ecosystems, from the towering beech woods and wild heaths to the intricate network of streams and bogs. The author paints a picture of the forest's unique inhabitants - from the wild deer to the elusive otters and the now-vanished adder hunters. The book ultimately reveals the enduring power of the forest, its ability to preserve ancient traditions and offer sanctuary for both nature and human spirit. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
