Hardcover. Condition: Good. [From the library of noted scholar Richard A. Macksey.] Bound in publisher's cloth. Hardcover. No dust jacket. Good binding and cover. Sarah Lawrence Institutional Bookplate. Library stamps. "Richard A. Macksey was a celebrated Johns Hopkins University professor whose affiliation with the university spanned six and a half decades. A legendary figure not only in his own fields of critical theory, comparative literature, and film studies but across all the humanities, Macksey possessed enormous intellectual capacity and a deeply insightful human nature. He was a man who read and wrote in six languages, was instrumental in launching a new era in structuralist thought in America, maintained a personal library containing a staggering collection of books and manuscripts, inspired generations of students to follow him to the thorniest heights of the human intellect, and penned or edited dozens of volumes of scholarly works, fiction, poetry, and translation." - Johns Hopkins University.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. A first edition copy of this classic study by Beatrice and Sidney Webb. The Webbs were in many respects pioneers, and what they achieved and the way in which they achieved it are of an importance that has been increasingly recognised as the passage of times gives us perspective. Their constant concern was to ensure that their work would be 'scientific'. They stress the need in scientific research for complete objectivity, to be achieved in their case by keeping their historical and sociological studies wholly separate from their political writings. Because the first drafts for the book were made by Beatrice in 1921 and the final text was written by Sidney in 1931/2, one can also see expressed here, more clearly than elsewhere, the different temperaments of the two collaborators. Hardback. No dustjacket. Binding firm. Top of spine is damaged, inexpertly repaired with sellotape. Inside the book is clean apart from some spotting to half-title and title page, also to rear endpapers. No inscriptions, all pages unmarked. Not ex-library. First edition.
