Toute la vie de cet habile Napolitain est ressuscitée dans ce livre passionnant, dû à un spécialiste du XVIIe siècle qui lui a consacré une bonne douzaine d'années. On retiendra tout particulièrement les chapitres consacrés à la Fronde. Tous ceux qui participèrent à ce double mouvement, révolutionnaires et réactionnaires, revivent dans ces pages. L'on voit comment les deux Frondes, mal dirigées, furent mises en échec par Mazarin, qui en sortit prodigieusement grandi, devenu le dictateur de la nation, "protecteur du roi", "usufruitier du royaume de France", et quelques années après l'homme le plus riche de la chrétienté. Mazarin fut l'un des premiers hommes d'État qui aient mélangé la politique et les affaires à la façon moderne, c'est-à-dire en étant actionnaire, commanditaire, administrateur de sociétés, armateur, spéculateur, marchand de céréales, d'épices, de savon, de titres de noblesse ou de biscuits pour l'armée. Il fournissait aux troupes jusqu'à de l'eau en en tirant bénéfice. D'où cette fortune immense, ces amas d'or et de pierreries qu'il entassait dans le donjon de Vincennes et qu'il faisait garder avec le plus grand soin. Le livre excelle à faire revivre cette carrière prodigieuse de l'un des hommes les plus fascinants de l'histoire - Bon état.
