Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Poems and photographs from a painter whose gestural articulations and lush, textured landscapes draw comparisons to Klimt, Van Gogh and SoutineThis book comprises never before published or exhibited poetry and photography by the Canadian artist Matthew Wong (19842019), whose too-brief life yielded astonishing paintings in addition to work featured here. An introduction by Wongs friend and fellow poet John Wall Barger sheds light on the genesis of the poems and the ambition in Wong to faithfully describe the wonder and desolation of an artists inner life. John Cheim, founder of New York gallery Cheim & Read and an accomplished book designer, selected the photographs and designed this volume. The institutional recognition of Matthew Wongs achievements can be gauged by his four solo exhibitions at prominent galleries in New York, two museum shows in North America and Matthew Wong | Vincent Van Gogh: Painting as a Last Resort, the artists first European survey at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. The critical and popular appeal of Wongs paintings and drawings is considerable. Six Feet Short of the Moon is the definitive introduction to Wongs poetic and photographic artistic practice, two critical components of his creative life. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Wong's affecting exploration of the interior scene's double functionarchitectural space and receptacle of psychological depthacross never-before-seen paintings and works on paperAccompanying a landmark solo exhibition presented at the Palazzo Tiepolo Passi during the 2026 Venice Biennale, Matthew Wong: Interiors features never-before-seen paintings and works on paper that foreground the artist's flair for domestic interior spaces. The exhibition, which is curated by John Cheim, also features an essay by leading curator and critic Nancy Spector that draws upon newly released archival material held by the Matthew Wong Foundation. In his work, Wong investigates interiority as a critical locus for resistance, reflection and gradual transformation. Through the mediums of painting and drawing, he interrogates the spatial and affective registers of the interiorboth as a literal, architectural space and as a metaphor for psychological depth. These works engage with the tensions between containment and expression, memory and presence, proposing a mode of aesthetic experience that privileges introspection, slowness and affective resonance over spectacle or immediacy. As critic Roberta Smith wrote in the New York Times, "These paintings are extremely open and vulnerable. But once they lure you in, they leave you alone to explore their chromatic, spatial and psychological complexities."Upon receiving an MFA in photography from the City University of Hong Kong in 2013, Canadian artist Matthew Wong (19842019) pivoted to painting and drawing, teaching himself techniques through online forums and library books. Wong's work began to accrue critical attention just before his early death in 2019. He is best known for his deep-hued, melancholic landscapes populated with semi-organic figures rendered in watercolor, gouache and oil. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A beautifully illustrated exploration of the artistic and personal connections between Matthew Wong (1984-2019) and Vincent van Gogh. Shortly before his early death, the Chinese-Canadian artist Matthew Wong (1984-2019) emerged as a phenomenon. He started drawing and painting in 2011, at the age of 27, and within the space of just a few years had developed a highly personal style, using intense colours to paint imaginative landscapes. Wong's expressively lyrical works were inspired by both traditional Chinese painting and Western art. He was especially influenced by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), not only in terms of his painting style and choice of motifs, but also in some aspects of his life. Both artists were self-taught, acquiring their drawing and painting skills without tuition, and both faced mental health issues. Wong saw his own life reflected in that of Van Gogh, and once said: 'I see myself in him. The impossibility of belonging in this world.' Published to accompany the exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, this book explores the artistic and personal connection between the two artists, bringing around 45 paintings and drawings by Wong into dialogue with a group of Van Gogh masterpieces. Kenny Schachter, who knew Matthew Wong, contributes a personal introduction, which is followed by essays exploring the artists' biographical and artistic kinship. A beautifully illustrated exploration of the artistic and personal parallels between Matthew Wong and Vincent van Gogh. " This is Wong's second solo exhibition at the gallery, which follows Matthew Wong: Footprints in the Wind, Ink Drawings 20132017. The works in Paintings from Los Angeles 2016 differ markedly from those widely exhibited during the artist's lifetime. Instead of the blues which have become virtually synonymous with the artist in the public imagination, the palette and textures of these paintings reflect the super-heated atmosphere of Los Angeles, where a teeming metropolis collides with the harsh natural landscape: the Pacific ocean, mountains, and desert. Wong, a Canadian artist who was born in Toronto in 1984 and lived and worked in Edmonton, made these paintings in 2016 during a three-month stay in Los Angeles, the last stop on a visit which included New York and Michigan. The brushwork is loaded and expressionistic, revealing a distinct and compelling aspect of Wong's practice. These works seem to combine the color of the French Fauvists with the alienated sensuality of the German expressionist Die Brücke group, like Erich Heckel or Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and the plaintive directness of Georges Rouault with the streetwise grittiness of the East Village scene of the 1980s."--WorldCat.
