First Edition. in contemporary calf, slightly worn, plain spine with raised bands and red morocco label lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles and gilt edges, with the contemporary ownership inscription on the title-page of ?Desouvre? 8vo (165 x 105 mm), engraved frontispiece by François Chauveauet and pp. [iv], 122, [2] blank, 518, frontispiece and some headlines shaved close at the head, occasional headlines slightly shaved, The scarce first edition of this novel by the most celebrated novelists of the seventeenth century and one of France's greatest early women novelists. Mathilde belongs to a new phase in Scudéry?s literary development and is the second of her shorter novels, following Célinte, Paris, 1661, with the intervening six years overshadowed by the fall from power of her protector, Nicholas Fouquet. Dedicated to ?Monsieur?, the King?s brother, the novel is prefaced by a long and important essay, ?Les Jeux servant de préface à Mathilde? (pp. 1-122). In this fictionalised introduction, a group of characters entertain one another by giving each other pledges. The narrator describes ?une belle maison de campagne? in great detail and reveals at the end that it is the Château de Saint-Cloud, the home of Monsieur, the dedicatee of the novel. This first edition is also accompanied by a striking frontispiece engraved by François Chauveauet. Often remembered today for her famous salon, 'le samedi', her novels achieved an almost unprecedented popularity, spilling over into the legendary salon, so that each influenced each other, characters from real life became fictionalised and those from her 'romans héroiques' were attributed a resemblance never intended. « L?histoire éditoriale de ce texte le détache du reste de l??uvre romanesque de Madeleine de Scudéry : publié en 1667 chez un éditeur qui n?est pas celui des ?uvres antérieures, Augustin Courbé, il semble marquer le retour de la romancière à l?écriture après une parenthèse de six années qui correspond à l?embastillement de Pellisson. Aussitôt retiré de la vente, il fait l?objet de deux éditions en 1702 et 1704 qui, sous des titres différents et avec une nouvelle page de garde, reprennent la première édition. La mort de l?auteur, et surtout le contexte politique différent, autorisent alors la diffusion d?un texte qui avait pu paraître ambigu et malséant : le portrait du roi Alphonse XI de Castille en tyran n?est pas sans points communs avec Louis XIV, ce qui avait conduit Alain Niderst à voir dans Mathilde un roman à clé où, sous couvert d?un "masque transparent", était "[condamné] le despotisme de Louis XIV et de ses conseillers". Édition originale illustrée d'un frontispice gravé d'après Chauveau, accompagnée de l'importante préface intitulée Les Jeux, servant de préface à Mathilde. « Non pas vraiment inconnue, mais plutôt méconnue, la nouvelle que fit paraître Madeleine de Scudéry en 1667 devrait pourtant connaître un autre sort. En effet, loin d'être alors un auteur sur le déclin, la romancière (1607-1701) y démontre ses qualités traditionnelles jointes à une audace littéraire - voire politique - qui surprend. En ressuscitant Laure et Pétrarque, elle fonde la légitimité historique du courant galant ; en racontant les amours d'Alphonse et de Mathilde dans l'Espagne sanglante du XIVe siècle, elle entrelace idylle galante et intrigues de cour, amour et ambition, comme le fera onze ans plus tard Mme de Lafayette dans La Princesse de Clèves; enfin, jouant de la fiction du non-fictif, elle va jusqu'à donner à son écriture historique des accents critiques étonnants.
