It depicts a fictional conversation among Queen Elizabeth I, Ben Jonson, Sir Walter Raleigh, and others, employing coarse language and focusing on scatological humor, such as farting and sexual innuendo. The work was initially controversial due to its explicit content but is now recognized as a notable example of Twain's humor and satire. The piece is a supposed excerpt from the diary of one of Queen Elizabeth's ladies-in-waiting, written in the style of the period. It is a humorous commentary on the social norms and hypocrisy of the time, using a deliberately vulgar and exaggerated style to critique the ruling class. Twain was inspired by Samuel Pepys' diary and sought to imitate its style while crafting a fictional conversation filled with bawdy humor according to Albert Bigelow Paine in his biography of Mark Twain. A clean very presentable copy.
