Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, ins…erts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Boards have moderate shelf wear with some rubbing, fraying and corner bumping. Some moderate sunning and tanning, particularly to spine. Gilt lettering to spine is dulled but remains brighter on front.

Particularly fine portraits of James I, William Drummond, Charles I, Inigo Jones, Charles II and his wife and 2 of his mistresses, 17th century noble families and theologians (the two horizontal prints trimmed at the title), plus Sir Peter Lely, Sir John Perceval, James II and many others. A scarce book of mezzotint portraits. BOYDELL, JOHN (1720-1804) was a British publisher noted for his reproductions of engravings. He helped alter the trade imbalance between Britain and France in engravings and initiated a British tradition in the art form. A former engraver himself, Boydell promoted the interests of artists as well as patrons and as a result his business prospered. He was Lord Mayor of London in 1790.
