The Battle for the North: These acts document the creation and consolidation of the… Shrewsbury & Chester and Shrewsbury & Birmingham railways. These highly strategic lines were built to break the London and North Western Railway's (LNWR) monopoly on traffic to the north. Great Western Railway (GWR) These exact companies formed the vital, hard-fought northern trunk lines that were ultimately absorbed into the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1854, marking the GWR's historic push toward Chester, Manchester, and Liverpool. Includes the landmark 1844 act establishing "The North Wales Mineral Railway" (linking the Wrexham coalfields to the River Dee) and crucial legislation for major infrastructure like the Shrewsbury Joint Station, the River Dee wharfs, and extensions into the Black Country (Wolverhampton). The acts are bound in an old full leather binding titled in gilt to the upper cover, measuring 12 inches tall approx. Provenance (P.H. Edwards Collection): Features the distinctive engraved Ex Libris ownership bookplate of Paul H. Edwards (P.H. Edwards), the legendary specialist antiquarian railway bookseller and collector from Cheshire. It includes his handwritten cataloguing number (Cat.
