8vo, pp. xvii, [3], 16, xxvii [including facsimiles, some folding], [1]; publisher's quarter red cloth and grey boards, slipcase; spine sunned but a near-fine copy; bookplate of D. G. Bridson. First edition. Language: English.
Published by New York The Viking Press, 1968
First edition, first impression; 8vo; folding plates of the facsimile of the original notes and manuscript; publisher's quarter red cloth, over grey boards, titles to spine gilt, paper label to upper board, in the original matching grey card slipcase. This is the first edition of Joyce's mildly erotic piece which he had written around 1915-1916. There are within it clear elements later to be found in the Nausicaa and Oxen of the Sun sections of Ulysses. That apart it is a marvellous read in its own right. Spine very slightly dull but a very copy in the lightly sunned and very little marked slipcase.

Add to basketThe first, and by design, only printing. With four folding facsimile manuscript pages and reduced reproductions of other pages. 8vo, publisher's original red cloth and gray boards, the upper cover with Giacomo Joyce label, the spine lettered in gilt, in the matching original gray slipcase. (xx), 1-16, (14 + folding plates), (xxi)-xxvii pp. A very fine copy but for the lightest of mellowing to the red cloth spine. THE FIRST AND ONLY PRINTING OF THE EDITION, "LIMITED TO ONE PRINTING FOR WORLD DISTRIBUTION AND THE TEXT WILL NOT BE REPRINTED IN THIS FORM." A photographic facsimile and line-for-line transcription of a manuscript notebook written by Joyce circa 1911-1914, at a time when he was finishing A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN and beginning ULYSSES. Richard Ellmann, who provides the introduction, asserts that it is "a love poem which is never recited.Joyce's attempt at the sentimental education of a dark lady, his farewell to a phase of his life, and at the same time his discovery of a new form of imaginitive expression." Though Joyce never published this little piece, he did extract pieces and phrases from it for inclusion in A PORTRAIT, ULYSSES, and his play EXILES.
