Ludwig Lewisohn was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1883, and emigrated to the United States at the age of seven. He was the editor of *New Palestine*, and became one of the thirteen original faculty members at Brandeis University. He is the author of more than 30 books, including history, fiction, biography and Jewish affairs. He was a member of the Jewish Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was an honorary secretary of the Zionist Organization of America. He died in Miami Beach, Florida, in 1955.
