The flavor of the native dialect as well as certain Gaelic names and terms have been preserved in these wonderful tales. They are as fresh and vivid today as when they were first told hundreds of years ago. The 43 tales were contributed by an outstanding group of Irish writers including W. B. Yeats, Standish James O'Grady, Alfred Tennyson, Nicholas O' Kearney, Patrick Kennedy plus many more. These enchanting stories are written in both narrative and prose form and are accompanied by charming illustrations by George Denham. In his preface, Alfred Perceval Graves notes, "Irish fairy lore has well been called by Mr. Alfred Nutt, one of the leading authorities on the subject, 'as fair and bounteous a harvest of myth and romance as ever flourished among any race.'" Fairy tales are traditional narratives passed on from person to person by word of mouth. The Irish storyteller, while warming his hands by the hearth, would enchant and amuse his audience with tales about pookas, leprechauns, mischievous elves and fairy~eating giants. Other dwellers in this fanciful land include birds and beasts who talk and take on other human qualities, ogres, and old women with strange, magical powers. The Irish, long known as a superstitious race, believed that certain events took place due to the powers of these mystical creatures. In The Irish Fairy Book, we meet the beautiful white trout and learn about its never~ending search; Daniel O'Rourke and his exciting adventures; Moll Rafferty and the mad pudding; and the magical powers of the Bracket Bull. In "fairyland" there is no past or future~only the present. Here anything can happen . and usually does. The simplest creatures can adopt supernatural powers to disarm the evil character as well as aid the good. These tales, although now in written form, were passed down from generation to generation of Irish countrymen by word of mouth. Whether one is interested in Irish folklore or just enjoys reading about the adventures of the fairies and other fanciful creatures, The Irish Fairy Book will charm and enchant any reader today.
