Across the board, organized labor was moving to secure for their members greater power to shape their working lives. But the demand was about more than just wages and working conditions; at its heart was the dignity of the individual worker and the sense that workers as a whole had a right to participate in the governance of their industries. By the time of the Coal Commission in 1919, the shift towards workers' control was in full swing. Though its ultimate success remains to be seen, the book maintains that this demand represents a divergence from the past and a glimpse at British industry's possible future.
