Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. Original Second World War press photograph measuring 24.6 x 20.6cm depicting members of the Fire Guard service operating amongst bomb damage in Market Place, South Shields. The reverse bears a contemporary manuscript caption reading "Fire Guards, Market Place, S/S Oct. 2. 41". The photograph was taken following the devastating Luftwaffe raid of 2 October 1941, one of the heaviest attacks suffered by South Shields during the war. Contemporary accounts describe direct hits on air-raid shelters, major fires, widespread structural damage and low-flying German aircraft machine-gunning streets during the attack. A significant contemporary record of wartime civil defence and one of the defining events in South Shields' Second World War history. From the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette. Good condition with minor edge wear, creasing and handling marks associated with press use.…
