Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an innovative and comprehensive analysis of the Oresteia, the only extant trilogy of Greek tragedies. The author traces the evolution of the Oresteia legend, from its inception in epic poetry to its transformation at the hands of Aeschylus. By examining the trilogy within the broader context of Greek history and mythology, the book sheds new light on Aeschylus's unique contribution to the genre and his profound insights into the nature of justice, revenge, and the role of the gods in human affairs. The author argues that Aeschylus, while remaining faithful to the core themes of the legend, significantly altered its meaning. In particular, he replaced the traditional emphasis on vengeance with a focus on justice and reconciliation, reflecting the growing influence of Athenian democratic ideals. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in Greek tragedy, mythology, or the origins of Western drama. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
