Micaud Soc. Jesu Proffessor Physices" épidermures, frottements epars, coins déformés et à nu, , léger manque en coiffe basse. intérieur frais. Jean Jacques Dortous de Mairan (1678 - 1771), physicien, mathématicien, né à Béziers. il écrivit de nombreuses oeuvres dans les comptes rendus de l'académie des sciences, et dans le journal des savants, dont il était le président. Son oeuvre sur la dissertation de la Glace fut couronnée en 1716 par l'académie de Bordeaux, mais l'auteur la revit depuis et l'augmenta de plusieurs observations importantes et la meilleur version reste celle de paris, de 1749 . Elle fut traduite en italien, Allemand (CF Biographie universelle Michaud, 1820, T26, 289).

Originally written and published i…n 1716, the dissertation was one of Mairan's first major works, and was awarded the prize offered by the Bordeaux Academy of Arts and Sciences. The last section deals with artificial ice. An important and sometimes controversial figure in the scientific community of his day, the author was secretary of the Paris Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the Royal Societies of London, Edinburgh, and Uppsala, the St. Petersburg Academy, and the Institute of Bologna. He made importent studies on Aurora Borealis.His work here on ice, liquids, fluids and evaporations, was inspired by his experiences of the slowness of which ice melts and that it melts faster mixed with differents salts in freezing mixtures. It incorporates details of quantitative experiments, and treats the effects of cold on many substances.
