Son oeuvre sur la dissertation de la Glace fut couronnée en 1716 par l'académie de Bordeaux, mais l'auteur la revit depuis et l'augmenta de plusieurs observations importantes et la meilleur version reste celle de paris, de 1749 . Elle fut traduite en italien, Allemand (CF Biographie universelle Michaud, 1820, T26, 289).

Originally written and published in 1716, the dissertation was one of Mairan's first major works, and was awarded the prize offered by the Bordeaux Academy of Arts and Sciences. The last section deals with artificial ice. An important and sometimes controversial figure in the scientific community of his day, the author was secretary of the Paris Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the Royal Societies of London, Edinburgh, and Uppsala, the St. Petersburg Academy, and the Institute of Bologna. Bella legatura coeva in piena pelle marmorizzata con dorso a 5 nervi con ricchi fregi in oro al dorso (qualche piccola spellatura ai margini del dorso e per il resto in buone condizioni). Curiosamente questo esemplare presenta i marguini esterni bianchi leggermente bruciati alle prime tre carte, alle carte Eiii e Eiiii e ad una piccolissima ed ininfluente porzione dell'angolo superiore delle ultime tavole, le bruciature sono sempre lontano dal testo e interessano solo 1 mm di carta per pagina, quasi ininfluenti se non alla tavola in antiporta dove viene sfiorato il margine esterno di battitura. Prima edizione illustrata di questo celebre tratatto. Rispetto alla prima edizione del 1717, questa edizione è notevolmente ampliata e arricchita da una sezione sui termometri di George Martine. Jean Jacques Dortous de Mairan (Béziers, 26 novembre 1678 Parigi, 20 febbraio 1771) celebre astronomo francese, successore di Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle quale segretario dell'Acadèmie des Sciences di Parigi divenne celebre per i suoi studi sul ghiaccio e sul fenomeno dell'aurora boreale. Ventenne si reca a Parigi dove soggiorna per quattro anni, dedicandosi allo studio delle matematiche e della fisica, frequenta tra l'altro il Padre Nicolas Malebranche con cui approfondisce lo studio del calcolo infinitesimale. Ritornato a Béziers vi prosegue i suoi studi di fisica. Tra l'autunno del 1713 e l'autunno dell'anno successivo intrattiene un notevole carteggio con Malebranche sulla filosofia di Spinoza. Vince per tre anni consecutivi il Premio dell'Académie Royale des Sciences di Bordeaux presentando delle memorie sulle variazioni barometriche (1715); sul ghiaccio (1716), sui fosfori e nottiluchi (1717).
