Steel engraved frontispiece from a photograph of Henry, Lord Brougham and six further like illustrations of eminent scientists with a page of text describing their achievements, 5 full-page diagramm…atic plates and numerous engraved illustrations throughout the text. pp. xxviii (Introductory Discourse), 760. This volume covers Division I of the Sciences: Physics (Heat, Light, Electricity, Magnetism, Accoustics), Chemical Philosophy (both Inorganic and Organic Chemistry), Mathematics (all branches, with log and other tables), Mechanical Philosophy (Statics, Dynamics etc.), Applied Mechanics, Astronomy, Navigation etc. and Meteorology. Division II, the Natural Sciences were covered in subsequent volumes. This volume is complete in itself. Bound in black half calf, spine with raised bands and leather labels, marbled page edges. Contents are generally clean, one page has darkened and chipped edges through becoming loose, a few pages with some dirty marks, including the title page, damp mark to margin of frontispiece, end-papers creased at hinge and all over the rear end-paper with some tears, these have been reaffixed. The binding is worn but firm. An eminently usable copy, but shows signs of its age. This is an exceptionally heavy volume and will require additional postage. 4to.

It first appeared in this form in 1867, but it incorporates some material from an earlier "Circle of the Sciences" published in parts in the 1850s. We estimate this printing to have appeared in shortly after the death of Brougham in 1868. True to intention, the contents are encyclopedic in scope, valiantly covering physics, chemistry, mathematics, mechanics, astronomy, meteorology, natural history, zoology, ethnography, botany, and geology, with many sub-headings. The editor, James Wylde, apparently picked up articles by leading scientists of the day, including Michael Faraday, and John William Frederick Herschel. Glaringly absent from the roster is Charles Darwin. The section on comparative physiology was assigned to Darwin's adversary, Richard Owen (1804-1892).
