Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Locke SPECTRUM, Bleiler GUIDE 1022. "Lindsay's magnum opus.colosol.nothing comparable. Pucker to lower corner of first 30 or so pages, clean, free of any former owner marking.
Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Devil's Tor', first published in 1932, is the undoubted masterpiece of David Lindsay. Many of the extraordinary and disturbing themes of his first and most famous work, 'A Voyage to Arcturus' (1920), are explored more deeply and expressed more clearly in this book. The story describes the experiences and mental processes of various people drawn by an active Fate to Devil's Tor, a minor Dartmoor height.Lives are transformed, shattered and ended by forces that can remake stars and galaxies.Nowhere in printed English is the working of the Unseen in living minds more vividly drawn than in David Lindsay; and nowhere in Lindsay more magnificently than in 'Devil's Tor'.

First Edition
First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-487 [488: printer's imprint], original black cloth, spine panel stamped in gold. The fifth and final novel published during Lindsay's lifetime. Though boring, the work has its memorable pages, even chapters according to Colin Wilson who spent two years getting through it. E. H. Visiak stated that he initially believed that the book was almost unreadable, but upon rereading it - slowly - he found it fascinating and was so impressed that he wrote a fifty page critique of the novel. Brian Stableford says the novel is "marvelously atmospheric and admirably conscientious in its design of a hypothetical mythology and the metaphysics to go with it." E. F. Bleiler considers DEVIL'S TOR to be Lindsay's "magnum opus." [Reference: Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 3-218. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1022. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 140. Schlobin, The Literature of Fantasy 664. Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature I, pp. 391-95. Tymn (ed), Fantasy Literature, pp. 127-28. Bleiler (1978), p. 124. Reginald 09071]. Light foxing to first and last few leaves, front cover discolored, perhaps damp at point point and wiped clean, corners soft, a good to very good copy. (28400).

First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, signed by David Lindsay with "Sincere Regards," and dated June 1932 on the ffep. 8vo, [1], 487pp, [1]. Publisher's black cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine in original illustrated jacket. Very good with ownership signature in pencil to front pastedown, and original newspaper review clipping laid in which has caused some acid offsetting. Minor foxing to foredge of text block and light soiling to boards, else clean. Jacket with a few small closed tears to head and heel, wear at corners, and some staining and soiling. Price clipped upper corner, with 7s. 6d. net price visible on bottom corner. The fifth and final novel published during English author, David Lindsay's lifetime. Devil's Tor expanded upon psychological and metaphysical themes found in his first work, A Voyage to Arcturus, a book which J. R. R. Tolkien himself said he read "with avidity." (Humphrey Carpenter, ed. The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien. 1981). The plot, difficult to describe due to its breadth and scope, revolves around the uniting of two halves of a powerful talisman, and the potential apocalypse caused by that act. Barron, in his Fantasy and Horror, describes the work as "Marvelously atmospheric and admirably conscientious in its design of a hypothetical mythology and the metaphysics to go with it." A quite uncommon signed copy of arguably the magnum opus of this highly influential fantasy author. Barron, Fantasy and Horror 5-181, Bleiler 1022, Currey pg 314 (Binding A), Locke, Spectrum of Fantasy pg 140.

First Edition. First edition in dustjacket of this elusive work by the author of 'A Voyage to Arcturus'. Very scarce in the jacket. A controversial work. Laid in is a sales invoice for the book from the Cecil Court Bookshop, Bell, Book and Radnall, from 1982. Bookplate unobtrusively attached to thefront pastedown. A couple of small foxing marks to early pages. Jacket retains its price of 7s 6d and has a couple of chips (visible in the scans) to the foot of the spine and at one corner. The jacket also has some wear to the top of the spine and a rub to the middle of the spine. Otherwise a fresh copy of this difficult work.
