First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing of Leonard Spigelgass's Broadway comedy-drama, adapted from a story by celebrated actress and writer Gertrude Berg and Jame Yaffe. The play centers on family relationships, generational expectations, and psychoanalysis, reflecting themes popular in American theater during the early 1960s. The volume includes production photographs and a dedication to noted theatrical producer Lawrence Langner of The Theatre Guild. Original publisher's binding of red cloth-covered boards with black cloth spine and gilt spine lettering. Book is Near Fine. Binding remains sound and square with clean hinges. Gilt spine lettering remains bright. Red topstain retains strong color. Interior is clean with no ownership markings observed. Light scattered foxing and age-toning to endpapers, with minor offsetting from jacket flaps; otherwise pages remain bright and attractive. Dust jacket is Very Good, unclipped with original $3.95 price present. General toning and light soiling, moderate edge wear, small chips and short closed tears at extremities, and a larger chip/tear at the lower rear panel near the spine. Jacket remains complete and presents well. This copy is a confirmed First Edition, First Printing, with 'FIRST PRINTING' stated at the head of the copyright page. Published by Random House in 1963. The jacket correctly bears the original price and contemporary Random House theater-title advertisements on the rear panel, consistent with the first issue. Leonard Spigelgass (1906-1987) was an American playwright, screenwriter, and television writer whose career spanned Broadway, Hollywood, and television. He collaborated with Frank Capra during World War II and wrote screenplays for films including Princess O'Hara, Because You're Mine, and Deep in My Heart. His Broadway work combined humor with keen observations of family life and contemporary American culture.
