Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. On America's first modern dance company and its many collaborators, with reproductions of costumes, sets, ephemera and moreRuth St Denis (18791968) and Ted Shawn (18911972) pioneered modern dance in the US with their company Denishawn, founded in 1914. Incorporating elements from ancient, no…n-Western and Native American sources, Denishawn became the first important American dance company. A generation of dancers and choreographers, including Martha Graham, trained and performed with the company, and many artists, including Auguste Rodin, John Singer Sargent, Katherine Dreier, Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Cornell, collaborated with them. This catalog reproduces artwork, sets, ephemera and especially costumes, many of which have not been seen since the 1930s. Some of the materials and costumes, as well as the choreography, borrow from East and South Asian and Native American cultures, and the publication interrogates the legacy of cultural appropriation in dance. The materials also demonstrate St. Denis and Shawns stylistic and personal connections to American and European modernists, broadening an understanding of American dance in early modernism. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Condition: OTTIMO USATO. Curatore: Fabbro, A.;Tomassini, S. Numero pagine 201. S.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Gods Who Dance' is a seminal exploration of the rich and diverse dance traditions found across Asia, authored by the pioneering American dancer Ted Shawn. During his extensive travels through Japan, China, India, Java, and other regions, Shawn meticulously observed and documented the sacre…d and secular dances that defined these cultures. The work serves as both a personal travelogue and an anthropological study, capturing the technical precision and spiritual depth of traditional performers.Shawn's insights bridge the gap between Western modern dance and Eastern classical forms, highlighting the universal language of movement. Through vivid descriptions of costumes, music, and choreography, 'Gods Who Dance' offers an invaluable record of performing arts heritage at a time when many of these traditions were largely unknown to the Western world. This work remains a cornerstone for dance historians and cultural enthusiasts interested in the evolution of global performance arts and the foundational influences that shaped modern choreography. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible.
