John has fallen deeply in love with Ellen during these short meetings and over the next years he continues to try and find her. He does discover that she has worked for the CIA and that she seems to have disappeared on a ship to New York. When John discovers a new article that seems to indicate Ellen is still alive, he heads to New York, against advice / orders from the American FBI and even Scotland Yard, to try and find Ellen. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. H. Lawrence Hoffman (illustrator). 8vo., 190pp. Sharp First Edition, though possibly a second printing. Though there are no other printings listed, the First Printing statement is not present as called for during this period. It is also possible it is a BCE with the clipped jacket but there is no blind-stamp on the rear board as is typical. An Inner Sanctum Mystery. Bound in yellow cloth with lettering in black. Square, tight and clean throughout with just a hint of off-setting end-papers. None of the toning to pages so commonly found. Spine ends and tips with a touch of rubbing. Attractive clipped dust-jacket has a few tiny nicks and closed edge-tears. Folds and surfaces well rubbed which is also common on this black jacket. Still solid and complete. Though not marked in any way, this came directly from the library of H. Lawrence Hoffman who illustrated the dust-jacket. His son, David Hoffman, the noted documentary filmmaker, has signed a statement with information about his father, the artist, and attesting that the book was from his library. A copy of this is included. A presentable collectable copy.
