Illustrated throughout with small drawings, may anatomical. A title in the Nature Series. 158 pp. Good overall in rust-colored cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front cover, and gilt and black illustration on front cover (tear to side of spine, previous owner's name, offsetting to endpapers, but otherwise a clean and appealing vintage copy).…

Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1874. First edition. vii, 158pp., a frontispiece and 88 figures in the text. St. George Jackson Mivart (1827-1900) was an English biologist. He started out as an ardent believer in natural selection and later became one of its fiercest critics. He published many biological, philosophical, and other works. The present book is part of the publisher's "Nature Series" and is a study of the common frog, of the genus Rama and the species Temporaria. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front board and a gold and black design for the series on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards. The spine ends are bumped with wear to the cloth at the bottom of the spine and a little damage to the cloth at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with some light soiling on the top and bottom margin of the first few pages. There is no blank rear free endpaper but none appears to have been removed and this may be as issued. The front free endpaper is browned with a name and address label on the top corner and a name and date has been written on the front fixed endpaper.…
