La "Dissertazione" del Baldasseroni deve essere ascritta a quel ristretto numero di osservazioni meritorie che i più insigni studiosi italiani furono chiama…ti ad esprimere intorno al testo diramato dalla Commissione del Regno incaricata di estendere all'Italia un "code de commerce", avente per base quello già in vigore nell'Impero. La prima parte della Dissertazione è relativa alla storia del commercio, degli usi e delle antiche tecniche commerciali nonché alla corrispondente legislazione storica nei diversi Paesi europei; la seconda, e ultima, strutturata a sua volta in nove sezioni, appartiene principalmente all'esame della norma corrente, con doviziosa esemplificazione di casi, e alla comparazione di questa con la norma riformata secondo i proponimenti dell'autore. Grande rilievo assumono, nell'esemplificazione dei casi, i riferimenti alle regole del commercio marittimo e degli scali portuali, rilevati sia in tempo di pace che di guerra. E' questa l'ultima opera del giurista Pompeo Baldasseroni (Livorno, 1743- Brescia, 1807), ritenuta basilare nell'ambito degli studi giuridico-commerciali e divenuta oggi assai rara, mancando a Kress, Einaudi e Mansutti.

D…orso restaurato e prime ultime carte di apertura difficoltosa per via del rinforzo, nel complesso un più che buon esemplare (gore leggere ma vistose alle ultime carte; strappo ricomposto all'occhietto, che presenta una mancanza al piede e al margine interno). Nota manoscritta «[Non facilmente leggibile] - De la Porte - Pothier» alla prima carta verso (probabilmente un riferimento all'abate Joseph de La Porte e a Robert Joseph Pothier, rispettivamente un gesuita scrittore e un celebre giurista, due figure di spicco nella Francia settecentesca). Curiosa nota manoscritta al piatto anteriore che pubblicizza un volume intorno a questo codice napoleonico: «L'"Esposizione della Controversia sulla riduz. delle donaz. anteriori al Co.ce napol. [sulla Riduzione delle Donazioni anteriori al Codice Napoleone] di Gian Domenico Romagnosi prof. di Alta legislazione" trovasi vendibile in Milano da Cesare Orena nella stamperia di Malatesta in C.a [contrada] di Santa Margherita al prezzo di l. 3 ital [lire 3 italiane]»; l'opera apparve nel 1811. Si legge in filigrana a entrambi i contropiatti: «Napoleone I, Per la grazia di Dio e per le Costituzioni, Imperatore de' Francesi e Re d'Italia: Eugenio Napoleone di Francia, Vice-Re d'Italia, Principe di Venezia, Arcicancelliere di Stato dell'Impero Francese, a tutti quelli che vedranno le presenti, salute»: sono due copie dello stesso manifesto, (data la presenza dello stemma napoleonico e la disposizione dei caratteri, forse si tratta di quello pubblicato a Milano dalla stamperia reale nel 1807, diventato nel tempo molto raro). Prima edizione italiana del «Code du commerce», apparso a Parigi nel 1807 ed entrato in vigore «à dater du dit jour 1.er janvier 1808», come lì esplicitamente specificato.
