First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good-VG. 1st Edition. viii+343, early ink sig.top t.p., quite inoffensive ('W.H.Rupell'), end gutters cracked but secure, otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked, no foxing but merest hint of edge browning to t.p. Blind-stamped green cloth covers clean and minimally worn, sl.sp.end & corner rubbing only, textured cloth with multiple blind-stamped border lines. An important and pioneering work by this modest English solicitor-turned-anthropologist (1835-1910) who died in poverty in Chicago. The best account of him is Rodney Needham's Introduction to his 1967 re-issue of Wake's 1889 'Development of Marriage and Kinship'. The phrase 'comparative psychology' refers to comparison between peoples, not, as now, between humans and animals.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book questions the nature of intelligence and morality across species, presenting a bridge between the fields of physical and mental science. The author argues that mental activity is directly related to nervous development, and that the di'erences in nervous structure between human beings and other animals are reected in their cognitive capacities. By scrutinizing the phenomena of animal life through a science-based lens, he challenges traditional perspectives that deem language as solely defining the human experience and charts a course for understanding the true essence of our place within the natural world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
