Contact seller4-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: good. First edition. First edition (stated). Cloth, 457 pps. with index; illustrated with photographs. Fine in the uncommon dust jacket, price clipped and with wear to the extremities and edges. Highly readable and fascinating account of the designing and building of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. Engineer John A. Roebling had designed and built other cable stayed suspension bridges (the most famous a smaller but almost look-alike one over the Ohio River linking Cincinnati and Covington, Kentucky) but this was to be the longest suspension bridge in the world with a main span of 1595.5 feet at an elevation over the East River at 127 feet at high water. Roebling's son, Washington A. Roebling and his wife Emily, also an engineer, oversaw construction beginning in 1870. In June 1869, John A. suffered a crushed foot when a felly struck nim on site, Tetanus set in leading to lockjaw and completely incapacitating Roebling for the final month of his life. His son Washington, aged 32, was named chief engineer to replace him. He made a number of improvements to the design and building techniques including the design of the two pneumatic caissons that would become the foundations of the bridge's two towers. While work was taking place in one of the caissons, a fire broke out and Washington went to help; he suffered a severe case of decompression sickness ("the bends") that rendered him so incapacitated that he could not even go to the site, watching and verbally assisting construction from his window in Brooklyn Heights. His wife Emily, who had taught herself bridge construction, took over role (if not the title) of chief engineer, running the day to day operations. The bridge (then officially named the New York and Brooklyn Bridge or the East River bridge, formally opened on May 24, 1883.…
