Item description from seller

First edition (stated). Cloth, 457 pps. with index; illustrated with photographs. Fine in the uncommon dust jacket, price clipped and with wear to the extremities and edges. While work was taking place in one of the caissons, a fire broke out and Washington went to help; he suffered a severe case of decompression sickness ("the bends") that rendered him so incapacitated that he could not even go to the site, watching and verbally assisting construction from his window in Brooklyn Heights. His wife Emily, who had taught herself bridge construction, took over role (if not the title) of chief engineer, running the day to day operations. The bridge (then officially named the New York and Brooklyn Bridge or the East River bridge, formally opened on May 24, 1883.…
