Grey pictorial paper-covered boards. Original grey paper-covered boards rubbed & rather stained, rebacked with black cloth spine. A good serviceable copy. Whereas other editions of this title have cloth spines, this issue has the spine covered with the same paper sheet as covers the boards. This has not proved durable in the long-run. "This treatise is written for that numerous class of sportsmen who delight in a day's shooting, but have neither the time nor the means to make the sport a life's study. Published at a popular price, it will, it is hoped, reach many who have hitherto been deterred from shooting, believing it to be an expensive recreation. The author's aim is to induce all who can to participate in a manly sport, and to advance the interests of those who can look to the Gun for pleasure, health or occupation." From the Introduction from the first edition. This treatise was written in the era of great change when nitro and smokeless powders were coming along, materials and design were catching up with this, and breech-loading systems and locks were assuming their contemporary forms. This book and its many variations document the later stages of the mutation of the musket into the shotgun. "The first issue of 'The Breech-Loader' was sold within four months of its publication, and the favour since shown by the sporting public has encouraged the author to print yearly revised editions." From the Preface to the eighth edition. After seven such annual revisions, technical progress had been so great that Greener wrote a brand-new edition, pretty well a new book, condensing and rearranging the text of the earlier versions in order to make room for a great amount of new material. . …
