Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice book in great condition. Pages in excellent condition. Pages in unused condition. Hardcover. English. Pub Year 2013, See images for condition. About the book >.>.> Bill Culbert: Front Door Out Back is a publication that accompanies the installation by Bill Culbert showcased at La Biennale di Venezia. This book delves into the nuances of Culbert's exhibition, presenting an exploration of the sculptural works that embody light and transform ordinary objects into extraordinary art. As a contributing piece to the 58th International Art Exhibition, themed ?The Encyclopedic Palace?, this publication amplifies the audience's engagement and appreciation of Culbert?s work. This marks the sixth official presentation of New Zealand at the Venice Biennale, a momentous occasion that highlights the diverse talents of its artists, including those like Culbert who have achieved esteem on an international scale. The installation comprises suspended sculptures that evoke a sense of wonder while challenging viewers to reconsider familiar items. Culbert?s technique melds light with a range of materials, resulting in art that is both austere and poetic, inviting deeper perception and appreciation of everyday things. The book also serves a broader purpose by documenting the artistic and cultural exchange involved in the Biennale. It features insightful contributions from writers such as Yves Abrioux and Justin Paton, who provide rich commentary and foster a deeper understanding of Culbert?s artistic vision. The publication is a collaboration among various institutions and individuals dedicated to the success of New Zealand's representation in Venice, acknowledging the support from the Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa and institutional partners. It stands as a testament to the efforts behind Culbert?s remarkable presentation and the cultural significance of New Zealand?s artistic contributions on the global stage.…

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 104 pages. 'NZ pavilion 55th International art exhibition, la Biennale di venezia '-nice clean copyFew New Zealand artists have sustained such a creative practice over so many ye ars to such international acclaim. Culbert's transformation of ordinary and ofte n discarded objects into an extraordinary otherness is uplifting, quite literall y so in the case of the suspended sculptures he has fashioned for La PietÃÂ? ? Despite its sometimes cheerful air of improvisation, nothing in Culbert's pra ctice is gratuitous. Combining light and things with rare economy, he produces a rt that is austere, poetic and challenging in the way it invites us to revalue f amiliar things and focus our perceptions. --Foreword.…

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. A very close to new copy. Bill Culbert is one of New Zealand's most celebrated artists. In Bill Culbert: Making Light Work, the first substantial book on Culbert, Ian Wedde explores the ideas, materials, and conditions that have formed Culbert's art over the past 50 years. Bill Culbert grew up in Port Chalmers and Wellington, but since 1961has lived largely in France and England (although he returns regularly to New Zealand to exhibit work during the oyster and whitebait seasons). Light has preoccupied Culbert since his days as a student at London's Royal College of Art in the late 1950s. He has used it in domestic-scaled works, in dazzling large-scale museum installations and in public spaces such as the Champs Elysees in Paris and the Millennium Dome in London. Ian Wedde suggests in Bill Culbert that energy and travel, congeniality and conviviality are also key to understanding of Culbert's immensely attractive but conceptually rigorous work, from his wall-mounted light sculptures made of cool, white fluorescent tubes and coloured plastic containers, his installations of objects from the local dump, his battered suitcases, wheels, light bulbs, bottles and wine glasses pouring light. Culbert is a also generous artist, acknowledging the importance of collaborators, locations, 'situations at a moment in time', the wider culture - and viewers. Thoughtful, compelling and extensively illustrated, Bill Culbert: Making Light Work is an assured participant in this conversation and readers will relish the opportunity to share in it.…
