Geoffrey Grigson was campaigning both against the absurdities of poetic fashion at the time and in favour of a new appreciation of the period under scrutiny - from Dryden and the founders of the Royal Society to Johnson and his circle. At the time of its compilation the art of the anthologist was in disrepute. Grigson, by breaking the rules, ignoring received opinion and resolutely following his own taste, arrived at a geniunely new and exciting presentation of his authors. The major poets look different through his eyes, the minor ones emerge with an engaging freshness. This is a book for student and amateur alike.
