Paperback. Condition: New. In 1930, Anthony Berkeley Cox (1893-1971) founded London's Detection Club, whose members swore that their "detectives shall well and truly detect the crimes presented to them, using those wits which it may please you to bestow upon them." The Detection Club pledged "never to conceal a vital clue from t…he reader." Anthony Berkeley's novels and short stories featuring Roger Sheringham and Inspector Moresby are among the finest examples of the fair play, challenge-to-the-reader tradition of the Golden Age. The title story in The Avenging Chance has long been considered one of the greatest formal detective stories. This book also collects all the additional cases of Sheringham and Moresby. This enlarged edition includes - for the first time- the newly discovered short stories, "The Bargee's Holiday" and "Hot Steel." Cover illustration by Gail Cross. Lost Classics design by Deborah Miller. Cover by Christina Luboski.Read more Continue reading Read less.

Soft cover. Condition: As New. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. The Avenging Chance and Other Mysteries from Roger Sheringham's Casebook was written by Anthony Berkeley and edited by Tony Medawar and Arthur Robinson. The book was published by Crippen and Landru Publishers in 2015 and is a Second Edition Enlarged. (All of the short storie…s within were previously published, but this is the first time they've been collected in this format.) A hard cover was published prior to this but it was discovered that one short story was left out . . . and this "enlarged" Trade Paperback was published so that, it is believed, ALL of them are now present. It's a soft cover book in Crippen & Landru's Lost Classics Series, is beautifully done (as ALL Crippen & Landru books are), and would make a simply great gift, to yourself, or any classic mystery lover. If you've not "discovered" Crippen & Landru Publishers (Doug Green), or The Lost Classics Series . . . treat yourself, or someone you'd like to impress! The book is in near fine condition.

Hard Cover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. 1st edition. A fine, unread copy fine in dust jacket. Number 11 in the Lost Classic Series. Low print run as the publisher states that "The first printing of each book will be small perhaps 400-500 copies, divided between clothbound copies in dustjacket, and… trade softcover." In 1930, Anthony Berkeley Cox founded London's Detection Club. His novels and short stories are among the finest examples of the fair play, challange-to-the-reader tradition of the Golden Age. Berkeley punctiliously presented all the clues to the reader, but as Tony Medawar and Arthur Robinson point out in their introduction, he loved showing that clues could be interpreted in multiple ways and Sheringham is often wrong in his conclusions. The title story in "The Avenging Chance" has long been considered one of the five or six greatest formal detective stories. This book also collects seven additional Sheringham and Moresby, one of which ("The Mystery of Horne's Copse") is a recently discovered novelette. Also included are Berkeley's own tongue-in-cheek satire of the Sheringham stories and a complete checklist of the Sheringham novels and tales. Introduction by Medwar and Robinson. Miller, Deborah (illustrator). Book.
