Condition: Sehr gut. Umschlag papierbedingt gebräunt. - The study of social aspects of illness has been severely hampered by the lack of an adequate sociology of illness and an undue reliance on a biology of illness borrowed uncritically from medical investigators. This book provides a short but comprehensive review of major sociological research on illness and its behavioural consequences and examines this work critically in the light of recent developments in sociological theory and method. The influence of American thinking is reflected in the choice of theoretical and empirical material for discussion, but this is set against British developments in order to highlight the special features of each tradition. In turn, both are contrasted with studies of non-western societies in the search for a general analytic foundation for the study of illness in sociology and social anthropology. The author starts with a detailed review of the classic research on illness behaviour. He argues that the confused and ambiguous outcome is the direct result of the inadequacy of the theoretical basis. What we should be doing is developing accounts of illness which view it as social action rather than as mere behaviour. This theme is developed in the second and third chapters which consider previous attempts at perceiving illness in these terms. It is suggested thata number of these attempts have been limited by reluctance to break away from the priorities of western scientific medicine. In later chapters an attempt is made to develop a theory and method which sketches out a sociology of medical knowledge, paying attention to its social and historical origins and its relationship to the uncertainties of medical practice.
