Paperback. Condition: New. For the rapidly growing thousands (both amateur and professional) who find the deepest satisfaction of life in playing chamber music, this is the only practical and authoritative guide.Beginning with such elementary problems as who should sit where, what kind of music stands to use, etc., it goes on to such puzzlers as just how loud forte is, how fast an allegro, how and when an inner voice takes over the lead, and similar problems in the works of composers from Haydn to the moderns.Every musical point is illustrated with specific examples, and there are 132 musical quotations in full score. The idea for writing this book was evolved while Ms. Norton was training with Louis Svecenski of the Kneisel Quartet, and the manuscript was carefully gone over and heartily endorsed by Franz Kneisel, leader of the Quartet which set the highest standards of this art in the United States. The dedication of the book to members of the Quartet, three of whom had been the author's teachers, was inevitable. An earlier version of the manuscript was brought out by Carl Fischer in 1925; the present revised version was prepared in 1961-2.…

No ownership marks. 190 pages clean and tight. Playing string quartets is, perhaps, the most specialised branch of chamber music, itself a specialised branch of musical performance. But it is one of increasing popularity, both on the part of listeners and of players-the present easy access for most people to recorded music has removed all fear of "difficulty" on the part of the listeners, and the improvement in technique fostered by today's teaching of music in the schools, and by such organisations as the Youth Orchestra, has led more and more amateur and, indeed, professional musicians to find relaxation in quartet-playing. But until now there has been no book dealing specifically with the special technical and interpretative problems involved. This book is the first to do so, and it fills the gap in an extraordinarily practical and comprehensive manner. The author, herself a long-standing addict and a fiddler of no mean accomplishment, begins by discussing elementary problems: the best methods of seating arrangement; music stands; style, in music, in performance, and specifically in quartet-playing. She analyses the general principles of playing together: the importance of players listening to one another, of being able to read at sight while doing so; and the relationships within the group, social and psychological as well as instrumental. She gives excellent and detailed advice on methods of rehearsing and on the value to a seriously-working ensemble of playing through works. Size: 8vo. …
