Buch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume provides in-depth reviews of model systems that exemplify the arms race in host-pathogen interactions. Somatic adaptations are responsible for the individualization of biological responses to the environment, and the continual struggle between host immune systems and invading pathogens has given rise to corresponding processes that produce molecular variation. Whether in mollusks or human beings, various host somatic mechanisms have evolved independently, providing responses to counter rapidly-changing pathogens. The pathways they utilize can include non-heritable changes involving RNA and post-translational modifications, or changes that produce somatic DNA recombination and mutation. For infectious organisms such as protozoans and flatworms, antigenic variation is central to their survival strategy. Evolving the ability to evade the host immune system not only increases their chances of survival but is also necessary for successful re-infection within the host population.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease of public health importance in many rural areas of Iran. Saliva of phlebotomines consists of different molecules that are necessary for a sand fly to successfully take a blood meal. Additionally, previous exposure to sand fly saliva indirectly affects the establishment of Leishmania in vertebrate hosts. Sand fly saliva has immunomodulatory characteristics and induces a specific immunity consisting of antibody production and a cellular immune response. In this study we defined salivary gland proteins of wild population of Phlebotomus papatasi with various physiological characteristics at different seasons, and also the immune response of Rhombomys opimus reservoir host to different salivary antigens, to understand the natural interaction between vector, host and parasite in the study area. We also analyzed the effect of physiological and seasonal characteristics on the expression profile of sand fly salivary genes. We hope the findings of this study could be helpful in the designing of saliva-based vaccine to control the disease.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Since its inception in 1941, HI test has been subjected to variety of procedural modifications, however due to use of stable viruses in HI test much information has not been generated regarding the effect of antigenic variation on the sensitivity of HI test. With current situation of increased serosurveillance activities against HPAI all over the world, there is acute shortage of reliable antigen and antisera for conducting HI test against different avian influenza viruses. It has, therefore, become significant to identify a reliable source of antigens on regular basis. While undertaking such efforts at local level, attempts are to be made to identify a particular strain of AIV to be used for antigen preparation throughout the country. The study reported here has been designed to compare various HI antigens for identifying a stable type of antigen and also for standardizing a reproducible HI protocol for carrying out harmonization in avian influenza diagnosis and serosurveillance.…
