4to (ca. 26,5x21,5 cm), 62 Seiten, 1 Blatt, Original-Halbleinen. Vorgelegt in der Sitzung der Königlichen Ges. D. Wiss. Am 1. März 1879. Abgedruckt aus dem XXVII. Bande der Abhandlungen. Mit einer handschriftlichen Widmung des Verfassers Ernst Schering (1833 - 1897) auf dem Vorderdeckel: Herrn Professor Dr. Edlund hochachtungsvollst vom Verfasser. Schering wurde 1860 außerordentlicher Professor und 1868 ordentlicher Professor in Göttingen, gleichzeitig mit seiner Ernennung zum Leiter des Erdmagnetischen Observatoriums, wobei der astronomische Teil der Sternwarte Göttingen von Wilhelm Klinkerfues übernommen wurde. Die Sternwarte war zuvor von Gauß geleitet worden. Schering beschäftigte sich sowohl mit reiner Mathematik als auch mit theoretischer Physik. Ab 1859 war er beauftragt den Nachlaß von Gauß zu ordnen, der 1855 verstorben war. Der Deckel etwas randgebräunt, Rücken und Ecke oben etwas gestaucht.
