Joel Dorman Steele (14 de mayo de 1836 - 25 de mayo de 1886) fue un educador estadounidense. Él y su esposa Esther fueron importantes escritores de libros de texto de su época, sobre temas que incluyen historia estadounidense, química, fisiología humana, física, astronomía y zoología. En el prefacio de su Física Popular póstuma, el editor escribe que sus libros "alcanzaron un grado extraordinario de popularidad, debido al estilo atractivo del autor, su gran habilidad en la selección de material adecuado a las demandas de las escuelas para las cuales los libros eran intencionado, su espíritu comprensivo hacia los maestros y alumnos, y su carácter cristiano serio, que se exhibió en todos sus escritos". Nacido el 14 de mayo de 1836 en Lima, Nueva York , se convirtió en maestro de escuela de campo a la edad de 17 años, dejando ese cargo después de que un brote de fiebre tifoidea mató a su madre en 1851. Se graduó de Genesee College (ahora parte de la Universidad de Syracuse ) en 1858, y se convirtió en director de una escuela en el condado de Oswego en 1859. Después de ser gravemente herido en la guerra civil estadounidense, regresó a la dirección de una escuela en 1862, en Newark, Nueva York, y en 1866 se mudó a otra escuela en Elmira, Nueva York.
