Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A nice-looking lot of different editions of the Sufi poet's best-loved, classic epic poem. The individual volumes are illustrated beautifully by a range of different artists and in multiple formats. The poet, Omar Khayyam (or Khayyami) was born, likely at Nishapur, in the Persian northeast, somewhere between about 1025 and 1050 A.D. His surname "Khayyam" means "tent-maker" in Persian, which might, like St. Paul/Saul, have denoted his father's vocation and major income-source. The lot is comprised of the following: 1) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1938 in New York by Illustrated Editions. A big, tall, quarto hardcover format example, bound in pebbly black cloth over boards, sharp and distinct gilt lettering to front cover and spine, over burgundy label, gilt and burgundy illustrations to front cover and spine. Housed in the remains of a slip-case that has done its job admirably. Evocative illustrations of Hamzeh Abd Ullah Kar throughout, pasted-on opposite the appropriate quatrain. Some uncut bottom edges. Unpaginated; 2) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, illustrated by Edmund Dulac (13 of them, including at frontis). Illustrated hardcover, overall Very Good condition exemplar, and with a matching paper dust-wrapper. Nice-looking, pretty examplar. 191 pp.; 3) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, the astronomer-poet of Persia, being the Third Edition, published in 1872 in London by Bernard Quaritch. A Good condition examplar, pebbly burgundy cloth over boards, leather-backed spine, rubbed edges, joints, and with previous owner's bookplate inside front flap. Not illustrated. Chipping to spine head 36 pp. including notes; 4) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published by George G. Harrap & Co., and decorations, including at frontis, of William G. Easton in black-and-white and whose initials at every quatrain are evocative. Stamped brown cloth over boards, worn, rubbed and chipped, and with some loss thereof at spine. Unpaginated but roughly 40 pp.; 5) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, after The First Version, published in 1955 in London by The Folio Society, an uber-pretty little exemplar, gift-quality condition, housed further in a clamshell box and then the original publisher's shipping case. Red and gold decorated cloth over boards, protected in a stiff Mylar jacket. Unpaginated, but roughly 40 pp.; 6) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1899 in London by Macmillan & Co. Short little 12mo hardcover in format, blue cloth over boards, rubbed gilt lettering to spine, gilt-stamped design to front cover. 111 pp. and then four pages of other titles in the Golden Treasury series. This edition also reprises three essays, variations in the first three editions, and notes; 7) The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, comprising the metrical translations of Edward FitzGerald and E.H. Whinfield and the variant prose of Justin Huntly McCarthy. Published by Thomas Nelson & Sons, of New York. A pretty, pocketbook-sized exemplar bound in pebbly flexible black cloth over boards, gilt-ruling to front and rear, gilt edges all around, and with silk linen ribbon bookmark still affixed. No date of publication, but apparently early 1900s. 289 pp. including notes and bibliography; 8) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam; Quatrains of Omar Khayyam, by Justin Huntly McCarthy; address by John Hay. A particularly handsome little pocketbook-sized exemplar bound in full leather, published by Brentano's of New York, 1920, with four raised bands, title in gilt on spine. Decorated endpapers front and rear and with gilt ruling there and fleurs-de-lis. 111 pp. and featuring gilt page edges.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
