He used his skill to fabricate imaginary creatures, forming three-dimensional religious and political cartoons, lampooning issues and people that attracted his ire. His surviving specimens offer a fascinating insight into the skill and ideas of a controversial and idiosyncratic nineteenth century naturalist. This book focuses on his taxidermy, a prominent topic that has never been critically examined in any of the previous accounts, despite the key role it played in Waterton's life. .

Colour & b/w photographs, illustrations, photograph end-papers. Green cloth gilt. Fine unread copy. Detailed account of the bird collection assembled by Lt. Colonel Charles Theodore Echalaz at the turn of the twentieth century. The collection was donated to the local council at Waterloo, Liverpool, to be displayed in the Waterloo Museum, attached to the, then, new Carnegie Library. The collection sustained a direct hit during a bombing raid in 1941, and was further damaged in a burglary in the 1980's. The collection remains in storage at the library today. A description of each surviving case is accompanied by a colour photograph taken especially for this book. Echalaz printed his own catalogue of the collection (1907) with black and white plates of each case. Where appropriate, this book reproduces Echalaz's own photographs for comparison. .

Several chapters describe in detail how taxidermy businesses operated in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Their different styles of products, trade labels (including some poems from them!) and their major groups of customers, ranging from huntsmen to bird collectors, are described, with many quirky stories, historical snippets and wry comment. Although the main focus is principally on British taxidermists, the general picture also applies to contemporary taxidermists in Europe and the USA. A whole chapter is devoted to the special features of American taxidermy and how different it is from that of Europe. Frequent reference is also made to American taxidermists in other chapters and the Foreword is by Larry Blomquist, publisher of a major American taxidermy magazine.
