Published by very good, cloth bound Scull was born in Philadelphia in 1846. He traveled to San Francisco, North Carolina, and several times to Britain as a companion to Rufus King. "At Uxbridge he stops to buy a razor, but not without a long conversation with the cutler and his wife mainly on temperance." He was instrumental in raising money for a Home for Young Men at Friendsville and for obtaining a property at Maryville for a Normal White School. He died in 1884 "leaving behind him the fragrance of a life so full and so fruitful that it seems scarcely possible it could have been of so short a span." b, 1890

With a handful of attractive woodcut headpieces and dated colophons to two of its four titlepages. Modern copy of opening title page loosely inserted for reference. In "The Laws and Customs" Mackenzie provides an extensive description of crimes and their punishments including theft, witchcraft, felony, blasphemy, treason, murder, rape, adultery, incest, sodomy, bestiality and bribery, In "A Treatise of Mutilation" he goes on to define crimes of bodily harm, listing those body parts for which injury is criminally punishable, together with their respective punishments.
