Vyasatirtha was pivotal to the ascendancy of the Madhva tradition to intellectual and political influence in the Vijayanagara Empire. T…his book is primarily a philosophical reconstruction based on original translations of relevant parts of Vyasatirtha's Sanskrit philosophical text, the 'Nectar of Logic' (Nyayamr ta). Vyasatirtha wrote the Nyayamr ta as a vindication of his tradition's theistic world view against the Advaita tradition of Vedanta. In the centuries after it was written, the Nyayamr ta came to dominate philosophical discussions among Vedanta traditions in India. The Advaitins argued for an anti-realist stance about the empirical world, according to which the world of our experience is simply an illusion that can be dispelled by a deep study of the Upanisads. This book reconstructs the parts of the Nyayamr ta where Vyasatirtha argues in favor of the reality of the world against the Advaitins. Philosophically, it focuses on the concept of existence in Vyasatirtha's metaphysics, and on his arguments about knowledge and the philosophy of perception.

In the sixteenth century, classicist tendencies range from humanist traditions focusing on Horace and the teachings of rhetoric, via Pietro Bembo's canonization of a 'second antiquity' in the works of the fourteenth…-century classics, Petrarch and Boccaccio, to the Aristotelianism of the second half of the century. Correspondingly, the various tendencies to destabilize or to subvert or contradict these manifold and historically dynamic 'classicisms' need to be distinguished as so many 'anticlassicisms'. This volume, after discussing the history and possible implications of the label 'anticlassicism' in Renaissance studies, differentiates and analyzes these 'anticlassicisms.' It distinguishes the various forms of opposition to 'classicisms' as to their scope (on a scale between radical poetological dissension to merely sectorial opposition in a given literary genre) and to their alternative models, be they authors (like Dante) or texts. At the same time, the various chapters specify the degree of difference or erosion inherent in anticlassicist tendencies with respect to their 'classicist' counterparts, ranging from implicit 'system disturbances' to open, intended antagonism (as in Bernesque poetry), with a view to establishing an overall picture of this field of phenomena for the first time.

Friedrich Wilhelm Franz Nippold Friedrich Wilhelm Franz Nippold (* 15. September 1838 in Emmerich; 3. August 1918 in Oberursel) war ein deutscher evangelischer Theologe. Nippold entstammte einer evangelisch-katholischen Mischehe und wuchs in der Diasporasituation des rheinischen Protestantismus auf. Nach dem Studium in Halle, Bonn, Amsterdam und Leiden machte er 18601863 eine Reise in den Orient. Seit 1865 in Heidelberg habilitiert, wurde er 1867 daselbst zum außerordentlichen, 1871 in Bern zum ordentlichen Professor der Theologie ernannt. 1884 wurde er Nachfolger auf Karl von Hases kirchengeschichtlichem Lehrstuhl in Jena und lehrte dort bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1907. Im Wintersemester 1903/04 amtierte er als Rektor. Der Völkerrechtler Otfried Nippold (18641938) war sein Sohn. Werk und Bedeutung Nach frühen Arbeiten zur niederländischen Reformationsgeschichte beschäftigte sich Nippold später fast ausschließlich mit der Kirchengeschichte seines eigenen Jahrhunderts. Dabei nahm er zeitlebens zu aktuellen kirchenpolitischen Fragen Stellung. Sein Hauptwerk, die dritte Auflage des Handbuchs der neuesten Kirchengeschichte, ist in seinen Urteilen stark subjektiv geprägt, hat aber zeithistorischen Quellenwert. Nippold sah sich als Schüler von Richard Rothe, dessen erste Biographie er schrieb und dessen liberale Position er fortsetzte, auch als Mitglied im Deutschen Protestantenverein. Als Nationalliberaler bekämpfte er insbesondere den Ultramontanismus innerhalb der römisch-katholischen Kirche. Zu diesem Zwecke förderte er den Altkatholizismus und setzte sich erfolgreich für die Gründung der christkatholischen Fakultät in Bern ein. 1886 gehörte er zu den Gründern des Evangelischen Bundes zur Wahrung der deutsch-protestantischen Interessen und war bis 1906 Mitglied im Zentralvorstand sowie einer der fleißigsten Redner und Autoren. Er war ein Vertrauter des Großherzogs Carl Alexander (Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach) und des preußischen Prinzen und späteren Kaisers Friedrich III.
