The battle of Pavia in 1525, in which Francis 1, King of France, was defeated and captured, had tremendous impact throughout Europe; it has been described as "marking the end of the Middle Ages". The contemporary panel painting which formed part of the foundation collection of the Ashmolean Museum in 1683 is one of the most dramatic and detailed images of Renaissance warfare. This book tells the story of the battle and of the making of this famous painting. This is the third title to appear in a uniform series of booklets illustrating and discussing major paintings in the Ashmolean's collections. The painting, which includes numerous foot-soldiers and horsemen representing phases of the imperial assaults on the French besiegers shows a view of the city from the north giving a detailed, visual account, in a compressed synopsis, of the main recorded events of the Battle. The rise of Modernism, from the early nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth, was played out with particular intensity in France, especially in Paris where international artists were drawn by salons and dealers, the creative exchanges between poets and painters, and the bohemian atmosphere of such places as Montmartre and Montparnasse. This catalogue traces a course from Neo-Classical and Romantic artists like David, Ingres, Gericault and Delacroix, through Impressionists and Post-Impressionists like Degas, Monet and Seurat, to the ground-breaking experiments of Picasso and Braque; but it also shows that there was no straight line leading from tradition to the shock of abstraction. The story is altogether more interesting as academic artists and members of the avant-garde exchanged ideas and as rivalries developed between different schools and powerful characters. In works by Manet, Cezanne, Degas, Cassatt, van Gogh, Matisse, Leger and Picasso, this catalogue explores the artists who created Modernism and how they did it. At the heart of the story is a choice group of works by Picasso, Braque and other artists who first experimented with Cubism. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Alfred Jewel is probably the single most famous archaeological object in England and one of the greatest treasures of the University of Oxford. This handbook describes the Jewel and discusses the many questions it raises, not least whether it was made for King Alfred the Great (871-99). The jewel has received much attention from scholars since its discovery in 1693. The Ashmolean Museum also houses many of the objects that belong to the same late Anglo-Saxon period, and they help to set the Jewel in context. Some material in other collections is included for comparison; in particular, pictures are brought together for the first time of recent discoveries that have particular relevance to the Jewel. The collection effectively began with the gift in 1964, by Arthur Mitchell, of over 3,000 prints, including a large group of wood engravings. During the 1980s and 1990s, it expanded remarkably with acquisitions of large groups of prints, often as gifts from the artists, resulted in a succession of monographic exhibitions on some of the most important wood engravers. They included John Farleigh (1986), John Buckland Wright (1990), Clare Leighton (1992), Monica Poole (1993) and Anne Desmet (1998). A key point in this period of expansion was the acquisition of a comprehensive body of work by Gertrude Hermes and Blair Hughes-Stanton in 1995 from the artists family, which resulted in a memorable exhibition organised by Katharine Eustace. More recently, the Ashmolean has formed a close partnership with the SWE, and has been keeping the collection up to date by acquiring work by members, both at the Societys annual exhibition and privately.
